Philippines leading the eExtension charge.

While eExtension is an emerging discipline and at times hard to draw hard lines around, it is a sector that is set to explode. It is arriving very quickly and is likely to see wide spread uptake in the next 12 to 18 months.

The Philippines government has recognised it’s importance by appointing the Agricultural Training Institute to lead the provision of eExtension services.

Department Order No. 03 series of 2007 designates the Agricultural Training Institute as lead agency for the provision of e-Extension services in collaboration with the various agencies, bureaus and organizational units of the DA. This is to integrate and harmonize ICT-based extension delivery system for agriculture and fisheries. Source: http://www.e-extension.gov.ph/

While the associated web portal is in a beta phase, it is significant that the government should put resources behind eExtension. There are already a number of online videos in the crop videos section of the site (including one on the cultivation of Tilapia).

We will certainly learn from your site particularly on the strategies and new trends on e-Extension and hopefully we can also do it here in the Philippines. We are lucky that we have the support of the management as well as the government for this program and we will continue to implement this kind of program and evolve further based on your experiences as well as the other countries, since we believe that through e-Extension we can reach out to more people especially the extension workers, people who want to invest in agriculture and the farmers, fishers and the youth.Thanks again and more power!

It is very inspiring that you have taken note of a very simple beginning! Simple, in that, our agency started with very little resource and very little knowledge. But THE BIG DREAM to reach out to as many people in the rural areas who have no or have the least resources to reach the nearest Training Center, pushed us to explore options other than the traditional four walled classroom to bring new technologies to farmers. We felt BIG by your post . . . what a great privilege! We hope we can take advantage of this healthy discussion on e-Extension experiences, for through it, we can improve and have better quality; we can expand and reach out to more of our farmers in the hinterlands through our agricultural technicians; we can have greater depth in out services; we can also have greater color in our mechanisms. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
